The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has announced the appointment of Alexander Mohr, PhD, as its new president. Effective November 14, 2024, Dr. Mohr steps into the role to succeed Martina Bianchini, who has led the organization since 2016. With a career spanning regulatory affairs, association leadership, and international consultancy, Dr. Mohr is well-positioned to advance IFRA’s mission of promoting the safe and sustainable use of fragrances globally.
Driving IFRA’s Vision Forward
Dr. Mohr brings a strong background in association management, having most recently served as Executive Director of the European Flavour Industry Association (EFFA) from 2016 to 2024. His leadership experience also includes serving as Secretary General of the Association of European Producers of Steel Packaging and leading public affairs for the European container glass industry. Dr. Mohr’s expertise in managing trade associations and navigating regulatory landscapes will be instrumental as he leads IFRA into a new chapter.
In his first statement, Dr. Mohr expressed both humility and ambition: “I am honored to take on the role of President of IFRA and continue the organization’s commitment to safe and sustainable fragrance. I am grateful to Martina for her dedication and contribution to the industry, and I look forward to building on her work.”
A Legacy of Transformation
Martina Bianchini’s eight-year tenure as IFRA President marked a period of significant growth and globalization. Under her leadership, the organization expanded its reach, establishing regional offices in APAC, LATAM, and India. Her emphasis on cross-cultural collaboration and strategic vision strengthened IFRA’s ability to address the evolving needs of the fragrance industry.
Reflecting on Dr. Mohr’s appointment, Bianchini noted, “Alexander’s deep understanding of the trade association landscape and his pan-sectoral expertise make him the ideal person to guide IFRA forward. I am thrilled to see him take on this position and am confident he will continue the drive towards IFRA’s vision.”
Balancing Tradition with Innovation
Founded in 1973, IFRA represents hundreds of fragrance ingredient manufacturers and compounders, along with 22 national associations. It champions safe and sustainable practices across the fragrance industry. At the heart of IFRA’s mission is the IFRA Standards, a safety program that applies rigorous scientific assessments to fragrance ingredient use. These standards form the backbone of the IFRA Code of Practice, ensuring that members worldwide comply with both international regulations and good manufacturing practices.
Dr. Mohr’s leadership will aim to strengthen these foundational elements while also addressing emerging challenges in sustainability and consumer safety.
A President with Global Insight
Dr. Mohr’s academic credentials and career reflect a deep understanding of international relations and regulatory frameworks. He earned his doctorate degree in International Relations from the Center for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies (CEDS) in Paris and holds a law degree from the University of Tübingen. His professional journey includes roles as a political consultant, lecturer at SciencesPo, and author on global policy developments.
This wealth of experience equips Dr. Mohr to navigate the complex regulatory and cultural dynamics of the global fragrance industry, ensuring that IFRA remains a trusted voice in promoting innovation alongside safety.
Looking Ahead: IFRA’s Evolving Role
As Dr. Mohr takes the reins, IFRA is poised to tackle the growing demand for sustainable and safe fragrance practices. His leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on industry alignment and strategic global initiatives, building on the strong foundation laid by Ms. Bianchini.
With its emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and rigorous standards, IFRA will continue to serve as a vital force in shaping the future of fragrance.
